Why Are My Mom’s Feet Swollen? What Adult Children Should Know

You stop by to see Mum and notice something.

Her slippers look tighter than usual.

There are deep lines around her ankles where her socks were.

Maybe her feet look puffy enough that you ask, “Mum, have your feet always looked like that?”

And, like many mothers, she tells you she is fine.

But are swollen feet simply part of getting older?

Sometimes the answer is relatively simple. Other times, swelling deserves a closer look.

Why Do Older Adults Get Swollen Feet and Ankles?

Swelling caused by fluid collecting in the body's tissues is called edema. It commonly appears in the feet, ankles and lower legs, where gravity makes fluid accumulation easier to notice.

Painless swelling in the feet and ankles is particularly common among older adults.

There are many possible reasons.

She Has Been Sitting Too Long

Maybe Mum loves her favorite chair.

She watches television, reads, crochets, talks on the phone or simply spends more time sitting than she once did.

When someone remains in one position for long periods, fluid can collect in the lower legs and feet.

That does not mean she suddenly needs an intense exercise program.

Sometimes simply standing regularly, walking around the house, moving the ankles and legs, and avoiding hours of uninterrupted sitting can help support normal fluid movement. MedlinePlus recommends leg movement and elevation among the measures that may help uncomplicated swelling.

She Has Been on Her Feet All Day

The opposite can happen too.

Maybe your mum is the woman who still refuses to sit down.

She is cooking, cleaning, gardening, shopping, helping everybody else and insisting she is “not old.”

Long periods of standing can also contribute to swelling in the feet and ankles.

Sometimes those swollen feet at 7 p.m. are simply telling her that they have had a very long day.

There Was More Salt Than Usual

Salt can hide in places we barely notice.

Soups. Deli meats. Restaurant meals. Frozen meals. Sauces. Seasoning blends. Packaged snacks.

Higher sodium intake can contribute to fluid retention, and reducing excess salt is one of the measures commonly recommended for edema.

If Mum's feet seem puffier after restaurant meals, family celebrations or several days of convenience foods, sodium may be part of the picture.

Her Medication May Be Contributing

This is an important one.

Some medications can contribute to swelling in the legs and feet, including certain blood-pressure medicines, anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids, hormones and other medications.

That does not mean you should take Mum's medicine away.

Never stop a prescription because you think it is causing swelling without speaking with her healthcare professional.

Instead, if the swelling appeared after a medication was started or changed, make a note of it and ask her doctor or pharmacist whether there could be a connection.

Sometimes It Is the Veins

As we age, the veins in the legs may become less efficient at moving blood back toward the heart.

When the valves inside those veins do not work as effectively, blood and fluid can collect lower in the legs. This is known as venous insufficiency, and it can contribute to ankle and leg swelling.

This is another reason the location and pattern of swelling matter.

Does it affect both feet?

Is it worse after standing?

Does it improve after Mum puts her feet up?

Has it slowly become more noticeable?

Those details are useful when talking with her healthcare professional.

One Swollen Foot Is Different From Two Puffy Feet

This is one distinction I would never ignore.

If both feet become mildly puffy after a salty meal or a long day sitting, that paints one picture.

If one leg or foot suddenly becomes significantly more swollen than the other, particularly if it is painful, warm or red, that deserves medical attention.

A blood clot, infection or another localized problem can sometimes cause one-sided swelling. Mayo Clinic recommends prompt medical evaluation for unexplained painful swelling, particularly when only one leg is affected.

When Mum’s Swollen Feet Need Medical Attention

Swollen feet can sometimes be connected to conditions affecting the heart, kidneys or liver, particularly when excess fluid is accumulating throughout the body.

Do not simply reach for a water pill if Mum has:

  • New swelling with no obvious explanation

  • Swelling that continues or becomes worse

  • Significant swelling on only one side

  • Red, hot or painful swelling

  • Rapidly increasing swelling

  • Swelling together with unusual abdominal swelling

  • Known heart, kidney or liver disease with worsening swelling

And if swelling occurs together with shortness of breath or chest pain, seek urgent medical attention.

Sometimes the loving thing is not finding Mum another supplement.

It is saying, “I think we should get this checked.”

What Can Help Familiar, Occasional Puffiness?

When serious causes have been ruled out and Mum's swelling is the familiar, occasional kind, a few simple habits may help:

  • Break up long periods of sitting

  • Take comfortable walks when appropriate

  • Move and flex the ankles and legs

  • Elevate the feet while resting

  • Keep hydration consistent

  • Pay attention to very salty foods

  • Wear comfortable shoes and clothing that do not feel restrictive

The point is not to force fluid out of the body.

It is to help the body maintain healthier fluid movement and balance.

Could Watershed Be Part of Her Routine?

For an otherwise healthy older adult dealing with familiar, occasional water retention, Enclare Watershed may provide additional fluid-balance support.

Watershed is a 12-active-ingredient formula led by 225 mg of concentrated 4:1 dandelion leaf extract per capsule.

It combines:

  • Dandelion leaf

  • Juniper berry

  • Buchu leaf

  • Corn silk

  • Potassium and chloride

  • Vitamin B6

  • Cranberry

  • Watermelon

  • Green tea extract

  • Apple cider vinegar extract

  • Paprika

The ingredients were selected to work together across water release, fluid balance, urinary wellness and broader wellness support.

But this distinction is especially important with Mum:

Watershed is appropriate for occasional fluid-balance support. It is not the answer to unexplained swelling.

Older adults are also more likely to take multiple medications or manage health conditions, so check with her healthcare professional or pharmacist before adding Watershed if she takes prescriptions—particularly medications affecting blood pressure, fluid balance, the heart or kidneys.

Do Not Ignore What Her Feet Are Telling You

Sometimes Mum's swollen feet are telling you she sat too long.

Sometimes they are telling you yesterday's dinner had a lot of salt.

Sometimes they are telling you she needs to put her feet up, move a little more and give her body some support.

And sometimes they are telling you something deserves medical attention.

The important thing is that you noticed.

Our parents spend decades watching us, noticing when something is wrong before we even say a word.

Eventually, we begin doing some of that watching too.

So if Mum's feet suddenly look different, ask the question.

Help her understand the pattern.

And when occasional water retention really is the issue, support her with movement, hydration, sensible nutrition and—with professional guidance when appropriate—a thoughtfully formulated fluid-balance supplement such as Enclare Watershed.

Because taking care of Mum sometimes begins by noticing the little things.

We dare you to be healthy!
